Jimmy Ryan has soft spots in his heart for Bill Monroe and Johnny Rotten. You can hear that in Jimmy's songs and vocals on his solo debut Lost Diamond Angel, which blends the deep traditions of American bluegrass, country and folk with raw rock 'n' roll attitude. That's nothing new for Jimmy, who was inspired to learn mandolin by the Rolling Stones' "Love In Vain" and became of the instrument's masters. He's straddled those styles since he started Boston-based roots outfit the Blood Oranges, and kept that stance through his jazz-bluegrass group the Beacon Hillbillies and recordings with Morphine, Warren Zevon, Catie Curtis and Melissa Ferrick. Catie appears on Ryan's Lost Diamond Angel along with Jimmy's fellow HI-N-DRY artists Dana Colley and Billy Conway (Twinemen, Morphine).
Jimmy Ryan returned to Hi-N-Dry studio-s in Cambridge, MA to record a follow up EP to his solo debut “Lost Diamond Angel.” The new album "Gospel Shirt" includes tunes recorded at the former Mark Sandman (Morphine) studio, where Jimmy enlisted the usual cast of Hi-N-Dry suspects to flavor his latest recipe of roots rock:
Duke Levine (Lucy Kaplansky) on creative guitars and harmonium, Billy Beard (Patty Griffin) on drums, Andrew Mazzone (Twinemen) on bass, Kevin Barry (Lori McKenna, Carol Noonan) on lap steel, Christian McNeil (Hybrasil) on backup vox.
Laurie Sargent and Jabe Beyer were also on hand to pepper the hot licks cooked up for "Gospel Shirt."
Produced by Grammy Award winning producer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow) and Billy Conway (Morphine, Twinemen)
Recorded by Billy Conway & Tom Dube (Richard Thompson)
Dr. Toby Mountain (Frank Zappa, David Bowie) at Northeastern Digital is the man behind the mastering.
All songs are written by Jimmy except “Turnaround”, a co-writing collaboration with Hayseed who has written with Lucinda Williams and Joy Lynn White.
